What is a volunteer firefighter?

That's a very good question. It is a person just like you, who is willing to "volunteer" a portion of their time to their community. The individual may be retired and have some extra time; they may have a full time job and only be able to respond at night or on weekends; or they may be self-employed and have some flexibility in the amount of time they can commit. They may also be a college or high school student who is looking to gain experience for future careers or for resume building. The reasons for wanting to volunteer varies from pursuing a childhood dream to having a desire to give something back to the community. Some volunteer to meet new friends and gain some new skills. Others seek out the hard physical challenges that come with the job. And while the reasons for volunteering are varied, the spirit is the same for all - a spirit of bold devotion to our fellow man in hopes of protecting all that he may hold dear.

While a diverse crew, the 112 gang is an overall fun-loving, practical joking, hard working, dedicated bunch that strives to provide the best protection available to our community. While we love what we do, we need your help. Over the years, our services have grown and have become widely respected and sought out, which has dramatically increased our call volume. Besides our ever growing responsibility to Avoca and its neighboring communities, we also need to work to raise the required funding that today's economy demands. Much like at your own home, our costs continue to climb each and every year. As Avoca is such a small community with no major areas of growth, our funding opportunities are limited to the creativity and hard work of our membership.

Have you ever wondered who may be protecting your family when you leave for work or for a trip to the supermarket? The answer is generally the same across the area.... your volunteer fire dept.

In Avoca, its no different. Day or night, rain or shine, hot or cold, we are there for you and your loved ones. Today, we are asking you to be there for others. Our department is comprised of individuals just like you. We work normal jobs, own homes, pay taxes. We have families, children and pets. We know what its like to worry about adequately providing for your loved ones and know the trials and tribulations of managing a household. We also know the devastation that can occur when a loved one is involved in a car accident or endures a fire at their family homestead. We know those types of situations can be very traumatic for a family. We also know that the services we provide impact how those types of incidents turn out.

What is a firefighter?
He's the guy next door....
He's a guy like you and me with warts and worries and unfulfilled dreams.
Yet he stands taller than most of us.
He's a fireman....
A fireman is at once the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men.
He's a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death.
He's a gentle man because he has seen the awesome power of violence out of control.
He's responsive to a child's laughter because his arms have held too many small bodies that will never laugh again....
He doesn't preach the brotherhood of man.
He lives it.
