From time to time, we may use some terminology on the website that can be confusing to the lay person. From station identifiers to basic terms, here's a glance at what it all means.

Common Station Identifiers

Basic Terms

AFA Activated Fire Alarm
Engine Apparatus that carries hose and water, responsible for extinguishing a fire.
Truck Apparatus with aerial device, responsible for search & rescue, ventilation, forced entry.
Rescue Specialized apparatus used in various situations from firefighting, vehicle rescue truck operations, specialized rescue
Command The "brains" of any operation. Responsible for strategies/tactics along with coordinating logistics and accountability.
MVA Motor Vehicle Accident
Structure Box Reported building fire requiring no or limited services upon arrival.
Structure Fire A fire in a building requiring firefighting efforts to extinguish and control.
Entrapment Situation in either a fire or vehicle accident where the victim cannot remove themselves, requiring FD services to take action.
RIT Team Firefighters who act as a Rescue Team, ready to assist/rescue any firefighter who may become trapped or injured on the fireground. Stands for Rapid Intervention Team.
Haz Mat Hazardous Materials Incident. Can relate to a spill or leak of a hazardous substance and may include a fire involving these hazardous substances.
Hurst Tools Brand name for the jaws of life system carried on the rescue unit. Used in various rescue scenarios.
TRT Technical Rescue Team
SCBA Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. Used to provide firefighters breathable air when working in hazardous environments.
